Myth Busters
Myth: Churches cannot speak out on issues of public policy because the Constitution requires separation of Church and State.
Fact: The U.S. Constitution actually protects the right of churches to speak about issues of public policy. Churches have long been one of the most important and influential voices on matters of public policy in America.
Myth: Separation of Church and State are in the Constitution.
Fact: Separation of Church and State is not in our Constitution or our Bill of Rights.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
These words are found in the Bill of Rights, Amendment 1. It was adopted on June 15th, 1790. These words prevent the federal or state governments from establishing a "church of the United States". However, it does not keep God, or Biblical principles out of our government.
